SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Building an American Voice" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the opening of our new exhibition Building an American Voice. \nSince the nation’s founding\, there have been fierce debates regarding which members of society had access to the “unalienable rights” of “life\, liberty\, and the pursuit of happiness” articulated in the Declaration of Independence. In the centuries after America began its democratic experiment\, not every voice has been heard. Our new exhibition explores moments in local and national history that highlight how people of all ages\, backgrounds\, and cultures took action to advocate for social justice\, fought for civil rights\, and often succeeded in enacting change. \nFree Admission \nBuilding an American Voice and its related programs are generously sponsored by CT Humanities and M&T Bank. \n \n

SUMMARY:Tavern Night
DESCRIPTION:In 1824\, the Marquis de Lafayette\, the last living General of the Continental Army from the Revolutionary War\, embarked on a triumphant return to the United States on a whirlwind trip\, and on August 20\, 1824\, he visited Fairfield\, Connecticut\, where he was lavishly entertained by the Town’s citizens. \nThe Fairfield Museum is hosting an extraordinary evening of food\, drink\, and song at the historic Sun Tavern\, Fairfield’s only remaining tavern from the 1700s. Join us for light bites from Martel Bistro\, beer on tap from Elicit Brewing Company\, and tavern songs with Cliff Haslam and Joseph Morneault. Raise a glass to commemorate Lafayette’s visit to Connecticut in the summer of 1824! \n$75 per person \n  \nAbout the Performers \nCliff Haslam is a native of Warrington\, Chesire\, England but currently a resident of Madison\, CT. While Cliff has long been a well-known performer in the New England folk tradition—a fixture at some pubs long since passed to history and on myriad recordings—his longest gig has been playing in the Griswold Inn of Essex since 1972. Eventually\, Cliff saw the value of putting together a regular band of fellow musicians to back him up during this and other performances\, and so officially formed his regular side-players as The Jovial Crew in 1986. \nJoseph Morneault is one of the original members of the band The Jovial Crew\, playing alongside of Cliff since the formation. Joseph is a social historian and performer\, bringing to life early American songs relating to the everyday person. He is the owner\, operator\, and performer at MusiqueMorneaux\, a workshop that handcrafts woodwinds for traditional Celtic music\, early American\, fife & drum corps and more. His involvement with traditional and historical fife and drum goes back to his earliest grammar school days and has grown to include the crafting of instruments.

Growing public need and local benefactors. Dichotomies characterize the Gilded Age in Fairfield. The “Gilded Age” (1865-1912) was a period of immense growth in America known for lavish expressions of wealth and cavernous class distinctions. In 1873\, Mark Twain gave the era its name with the novel\, The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today. Tremendous social and economic changes could also be found in Fairfield—changes that would not have been possible without the working class supporting the grand lifestyle of the upper classes. \nThis exhibition presents the industrialists\, philanthropists\, and entrepreneurs who summered in the Fairfield area\, including P.T. Barnum\, Annie Burr and Oliver Gould Jennings\, Dr. Ira DeVer Warner\, and Jonathan and Harriet V.S. Thorne\, alongside the people who made their lifestyles possible. Money Talks: The Gilded Age in Fairfield is on view at the Fairfield Museum and History Center through June 16\, 2024. \n  \nAbout the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum \nLMMM’s 2024 programs are made possible in part by LMMM’s Founding Patrons: The Estate of Mrs. Cynthia Clark Brown; LMMM’s Leadership Patrons: The Sealark Foundation; and LMMM’s 2024 Season Distinguished Benefactors: The City of Norwalk\, The Maurice Goodman Foundation\, and Lockwood-Mathews Foundation\, Inc. For more information on tours and programs\, please visit www.lockwoodmathewsmansion.com\, email info@lockwoodmathewsmansion.com\, or call 203-838-9799. \n
