SUMMARY:History Bites | Oystering in Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:Oysters once grew freely along the Connecticut coastline\, long a staple of Native American diets. By the 1800s\, oystering became a major industry\, particularly for Bridgeport\, Norwalk\, and New Haven. The oysters from the Long Island Sound were legendary\, and oyster production peaked in Connecticut in the early 1900s. Join Neil Berro\, a local historian working on a manuscript on the history of Connecticut oystering and its deep-rooted ties to New Haven\, to learn more and discover the recent aquaculture efforts in renewing oyster populations in the region. \nFree with Museum Admission. Snacks and refreshments provided. Please feel free to bring your own lunch. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nNeil R. Berro\, is retired and briefly returned to a graduate setting classroom on US Maritime history which necessitated writing a 25-page paper. That paper grew to over 300 pages and five years later\, hopes for publication. Dozens of people were supportive in providing time and expertise to craft both a historical story but one that actively continues to the present day. Neil utilizes his journalism degree and strong historical interest to attempt to bring a “you are there” feel to the narrative\, its drama\, personalities\, and major events over an approximately 150-year period. Neil and his family have lived from the east coast to the west coast with stops in between in performance of not-for-profit responsibilities. He hopes that the contemporary reader will understand that all the issues first seen in the late nineteenth century remain active questions of policy and priority in the twenty-first century. \n  \nGenerously sponsored by Oak Lawn Cemetery & Arboretum \n \n  \nImage: A sculpture in Fair Haven shows silhouettes of the New Haven Oyster Tonging Sharpie. The boat was a local invention\, built first in the 1840s by James Goodsell. Photo: Neil Berro.

SUMMARY:Local to Fairfield Talk Series | Money Talks: The Gilded Age in Fairfield
DESCRIPTION:Immigrant labor and innovative businessmen. Domestic servants and wealthy vacationers. Growing public need and local benefactors. Contradictions characterize the Gilded Age in Fairfield. The “Gilded Age” (1865-1912) was a period of immense growth in America known for lavish expressions of wealth and cavernous class distinctions. In 1873\, Mark Twain gave the era its name with the novel The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today. Tremendous social and economic changes could be also found in Fairfield—changes that would not have been possible without the working class supporting the grand lifestyle of the upper classes. \nIn conjunction with the Fairfield Museum’s special exhibition Money Talks: The Gilded Age in Fairfield\, join Walt Matis to discover some of the industrialists\, philanthropists\, and entrepreneurs from the Fairfield area\, including P.T. Barnum\, Annie Burr and Oliver Gould Jennings\, Dr. Ira DeVer Warner\, and Jonathan and Harriet V.S. Thorne\, alongside the people who made their lifestyles possible. \nCo-presented with the Fairfield Public Library \nFree \n  \nPLEASE NOTE: This program will be take place at the Fairfield Public Library. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \n  \nImage: Postcard of Sunnieholme and its gardens\, c. 1910-1930. SUMMARY:Readalong with Letitia Burton
DESCRIPTION:Local author Letitia Burton will read two of her books\, Guthrie and Gretzy and Austin\, that feature some of our favorite bird friends sharing themes of friendship and kindness. \n  \nFree with Museum admission \n  \nAbout the Author \nLetitia B. Burton—or “B.B.\,” as her young readers call her—believes that one of the most important things that a parent can do is read to their child for at least 30 minutes a day. It was a practice that she started with her three children after receiving this wonderful advice from the head of her daughter’s elementary school. It is through sharing these stories that parents and children can together travel to new and interesting worlds and develop shared compassion for the characters. Letitia continued to read to each of her children daily until they fired her\, one by one\, at some point when they were in middle school. \nShe lives in Southport\, Connecticut\, with her husband\, three children\, their two bunnies\, two chickens\, parrot\, and beloved yellow lab Shesky\, whom she now reads to. She loves to kayak out to visit the ospreys who inspired her book Soar. \nShe is committed to donating a percentage of all profits from the sales of her books to organizations working to help children or protect the environment. \n  \nGenerously sponsored by Oak Lawn Cemetery & Arboretum

SUMMARY:2024 Spring Speaker Series | Mountains\, Volcanoes & Continental Rifts: How Connecticut’s Geologic Past Has Shaped Our Modern Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Connecticut’s modern landscape is the product of our fascinating geologic past. The geologic history of our state is preserved in the bedrock and landforms of the region and spans approximately one billion years of Earth’s history. In this talk\, we will explore the processes of mountain building and continental rifting that formed the bedrock of our state. We will also discuss how erosion and past glacial activity have modified our landscape and produced features such as Long Island Sound. \n  \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Jennifer Cooper Boemmels is an Assistant Professor in the Earth Science Department at Southern Connecticut State University. Jennifer is a structural geologist interested in the geologic history of New England. Her work uses field-based observations of ancient structures such as faults and fractures to understand the tectonic evolution of New England and the driving mechanisms behind past geologic events. \n  \n\nAbout the 2024 Spring Speaker Series – People & Place \nJoin the Fairfield Museum and History Center for the 2024 Spring Speaker Series\, exploring our relationship with the land and examining how Connecticut’s natural landscape shaped our history. Dive into natural history with scholars and scientists from throughout Connecticut. \nAdditional Lectures in the Series: \nApril 7 | Our Hidden Landscapes: Indigenous Stone Ceremonial Sites in Eastern North America | Lucianne Lavin\, PhD \nMay 5 | Protecting Long Island Sound for the Future: Threats\, Progress\, and Opportunities | Sarah Crosby\, PhD \n  \nLight refreshments provided. Registration is required. $15 per talk | $40 for the series\, $35 for Members \n  \n  \nThe 2024 Spring Speaker Series is generously sponsored by Oak Lawn Cemetery & Arboretum. \n \n

SUMMARY:History Bites | The 1964-65 New York World's Fair
DESCRIPTION:Fondly remembered today by many who grew up in the tri-state area\, the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair attracted 50 million visitors\, and it wasn’t even an officially sanctioned world’s fair. After all\, Flushing Meadows Park was only a short drive away for Connecticut families looking for a summer destination. Connecticut was well represented at the fair\, from the New England States pavilion to General Electric’s “Progressland” attraction. Join historian Jason Scappaticci to learn more about the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair 60 years after its debut. \n  \nFree with Museum Admission. Snacks and refreshments provided. Please feel free to bring your own lunch. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nJason Scappaticci was born and raised in Manchester\, CT where he continues to live with his partner and son. After high school he earned his BA in History from Utica College of Syracuse University. After returning home to CT he enrolled in Trinity College and earned his MA in American Studies. He has a passion for history and enjoys sharing that passion with others. Some topics of particular interest for Jason are presidential history\, world’s fairs\, and the golden age of transatlantic passenger liners. These topics are reflected in many of the lectures he has taken around the state to libraries and historical societies. \nProfessionally\, Jason has worked in higher education since 2003. He began his career at Manchester Community College working with low income and first-generation college students. After 16 years at Manchester Community College Jason was named the Associate Dean of Student Affairs at Capital Community College. He is passionate about the mission of Capital Community College and enjoys his work there as much as he enjoys lecturing. \n  \nGenerously sponsored by Cindy Raney & Team \n \n  \nImage: 1964-65 New York World’s Fair.
