Jerome to explore the fashions of the ladies behind some of America’s presidents. The job as First Lady to the nation is not one to which these women were elected\, yet they served as the president’s hostess and confidante during times of war or peace and prosperity or poverty. Explore how the changing social\, political\, and economic tides from 1789 to the present influenced the fashions of the day and take a closer look at the clothing of those behind the presidency. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nSusan J. Jerome is the Collections Manager at the University of Rhode Island Historic Textile & Costume Collection\, having earned her MS degree from the URI Department of Textiles\, Fashion Merchandising & Design. She also works as Curator/Registrar of the clothing collection at the University of Connecticut. Ms. Jerome has taught about the history of textiles\, apparel construction\, and the reasons why humans dress the way we do around the world. \n  \n\nAbout the 2025 Spring Speaker Series – Dressed to Impress \nJoin the Fairfield Museum for the Spring 2025 Speaker Series inspired by our new exhibition Dressed to Impress\, which will open on May 3\, 2025. SUMMARY:History Bites | The Great Loser from Illinois: Abraham Lincoln’s 1860 Visit to Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:After his Cooper Union address in February 1860\, Abraham Lincoln made a whirlwind tour of Connecticut ostensibly to support William Buckingham’s bid for reelection for Governor of Connecticut. In reality\, Lincoln was engaged in a stealth campaign to secure the Republican nomination for President of the United States.  On Lincoln’s birthday\, join Dale Plummer\, Norwich City Historian\, to learn more about Lincoln’s travels through Connecticut. \nFree with Museum admission. Snacks and refreshments provided. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nDale Plummer has been Norwich’s City History for 35 years. In 2011\, he was chair of the city’s Emancipation Proclamation Commemoration Committee. The committee commissioned the casting of a 250-pound bronze bell by Verdin Co. at the waterfront park in honor of the Proclamation. Mr. Plummer has a MA in History from the University of Connecticut and has been active in historic preservation in New London and Norwich. He lives in the former Wauregan Hotel\, which he helped save from the wrecking ball\, and where Abraham Lincoln stayed on March 9\, 1860.

SUMMARY:2025 Spring Speaker Series | Posture\, Motion\, Poise: Fashion & Appearance
DESCRIPTION:Fashion is as much about the body as it is about clothes. The right garments\, made from the right materials and trimmings that were accessorized smartly\, had to be worn\, used\, and displayed in a manner that confirmed your status\, or else hid your attempts at aspiration. As a result\, restraint in how the body traveled in motion and posed at rest often became a determining factor in measuring one’s dressed appearance\, with disastrous (and sometimes humorous) consequences for those who failed. \nThis illustrated\, 40-minute talk takes the topic of deportment – how a person carried themselves and held their bodies – and applies it to fashionably dressed bodies of the 18th\, 19th\, and early 20th centuries. This period saw a proliferation of fashion goods produced\, and a growing media to sell them. Corresponding advice on correct deportment – including posture\, motion\, and poise – continued earlier advice that advocated for restraint and “an easy air.” \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nDavid E. (Ned) Lazaro is the Associate Curator of Costume and Textiles at The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford\, Connecticut. He holds a master’s degree in fashion and textile history from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst. Ned has researched\, lectured\, published\, and taught on various aspects of Western clothing and textiles from the 17th through 20th centuries. DESCRIPTION:Cornelius Vanderbilt\, nicknamed “the Commodore\,” was an interesting personality. His investments in the rapidly growing railroad industry in the 1800s led to an empire. Join financial historian John E. Herzog to dive into the story of Vanderbilt and learn more about the New York Central Railroad\, which serves as the foundation of today’s local Metro-North and Amtrak lines. \nFree with Museum admission. Snacks and refreshments provided. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nIn 1959\, John E. Herzog joined his father’s New York stock investment firm and later expanded the company to become Herzog\, Heine\, Geduld\, Inc. Having risen to the role of Chairman and CEO\, Herzog founded the Museum of American Finance in New York City in 1987. After the stock market crashed that year\, Herzog\, saw the opportunity to establish a museum to enhance public understanding of finance and economic history. A current resident of Southport\, CT\, Herzog served on the Fairfield Museum’s Board from 2010 to 2020. In 2022\, Herzog generously donated a large collection of financial materials to the Museum’s archives with the goal of encouraging visitors to learn more about the fascinating history of Fairfield and America’s financial growth.
