Fairfield Museum Spies Exhibition

SPIES! George Washington’s Culper Ring

$15. Free for educators in Bridgeport and Norwalk, undergraduate and graduate students. Please scroll down to register below.
Join us for a fascinating look into the facts and fiction about the Culper Spy Ring originated by George Washington. Learn about Connecticut’s important role in passing secret information from spies who traversed the “Devil’s Belt” between Black Rock in Bridgeport and Setauket, Long Island. Dr. Beth Rose, library director, leads a guided tour of the exhibition, The Spies of George Washington, which presents this story in graphic novel form through the artwork of Kirk Manley.

Featured speaker Rachel Smith discusses how popular culture represents history, with a focus on the popular television series, TURN. Compare and contrast primary sources with representations of people, places and events from movies and television, including Culper Spy Caleb Brewster, Benjamin Tallmadge, strange accents, sordid affairs, the “Turtle” submarine, and depictions of the Connecticut landscape.

Christine Jewell, director of education, presents teacher resources to easily implement in your classroom, including primary sources, student activities, non-fiction text, and online resources.
