History Bites: An Artist at Work: Robert Lambdin’s Black Rock Bank & Trust Co. Mural with Kathleen Bennewitz
November 13 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
Learn how and why Black Rock Bank & Trust Co. in 1948 turned to longtime Westport resident Robert Lambdin to create this mural for its Fairfield Avenue& Brewster Street office. Lambdin, who was not new to mural work, was hired to blend his artistic license and skill, knowledge of local history with 20th century marketing. The mural scene commemorated the vital role Black Rock Harbor played around 1810 to the maritime and community life of the region, while its’ sheer scale symbolized the bank’s reputation as among the state’s strongest financial institutions. The mural also served as a marketing attraction to draw customers to the bank branch and to convey the firm’s connections to Bridgeport’s strength as shipping center and the city’s continued commercial growth.
