The Road to Independence: The Burning of Fairfield
July 6 @ 1:00 pm$10 – $15
This brand new, outdoor performance and short walking tour will take place over the Independence Day weekend on the historic Museum Commons and Town Green. On July 7, 1779 the town of Fairfield was invaded in an attack by 2,500 British troops. The local Patriot militia fought valiantly to protect the town’s homes and property from destruction, but by the end of the day on July 8th, more than 170 structures had been burned, or were burning, in the once prosperous and bucolic community. What was that devastating and fateful 24 hours like for the Fairfield residents both during the siege and in its aftermath?
With professional actors and directors from Fairfield Center Stage, the Fairfield Museum goes inside this extraordinary moment in revolutionary history and gives a unique and intimate portrayal of the sacrifices our forefathers and mothers made for our independence from English rule.
Featuring the 54th Regiment Revolutionary War re-enactors, the hour-long tour will visit the recently-restored Sun Tavern and other historic sites on the Town Green. The number of guests on each tour is limited and are expected to sell out fast, so reserve your ticket today! Written by Tracy Brigden and Directed by Eli Newsom.
