After School Sewing Classes for Kids

History by Hand | Tuesdays, 4:30 – 6pm. Ages 8 – 13.
Session 2: March 27, April 3, April 17, 24 & May 1

Join other creative kids to learn art, design, and sewing, building confidence and problem-solving skills along the way. Learning basic skills, techniques, vocabulary and safety, students discover their own talents making unique sewing and collage projects inspired by history, including decoupage, patchwork pillows, cute animals and colorful block quilting. Calling all future engineers! Learn about the built environment and things get constructed. Take a tour of the unique and varied structures on the Museum Commons and build a town in the Kidzone Cottage. Create and compete in a simple catapult contest and construction challenges!

Family Focus: Architecture Around the World

Families and friends are invited to drop-in for fun, hands-on activities. Using found objects and recycled materials, design, build and collaborate on a structure inspired by architecture from around the world.

Storybook Adventures
Tuesday, April 10, 10am – 12pm. Ages 6 – 10.

Create stories of your own adventures inspired by the world around us. View fascinating photographs in the IMAGES Juried Exhibition and take a scavenger hunt with a Polaroid camera throughout the Museum Commons. Build a story world from your photographs, drawings and create your own book by day’s end.

Learn how to develop an artistic eye for capturing the world on camera. Analyze photographs in the IMAGES Juried Exhibition and critique the elements of a great photo. Experiment taking your own photographs in a Scavenger Hunt to find architecture, nature, portraits, landscapes, and abstract images.

Impossible! Polaroid Photography Workshop
Wednesday, April 11, 1pm – 3pm. Ages 8 – 12.

The Polaroid camera was the start to a groundbreaking invention – instant photography! Use a vintage Polaroid and revive this lost art with Impossible film – created in response to the Polaroid’s decline. Follow a photography challenge to build a mini portfolio of instant photographs and build a final collage with your work.

Create Like the Masters with The Lion’s Studio
Inspired by the art and lives of Monét, Matisse and Cézanne
April 16, 23, 30, May 7 & 14, 4 – 5:30pm, Ages 7 – 10.

Members: $115; Non-members: $130.

Your child will be inspired by the masters, their lives and accomplishments and apply this to their own works of art. In each class your child will be guided through a fun art lesson, focusing on shapes, lines, spatial relationships, and color. Children will create impressionist still-lifes, abstract self-portraits and large scale Matisse-inspired compositions. Please have your child bring an old shirt or smock to protect their clothes.
