In 1779, British soldiers attacked many towns along the east coast of America. Fairfield, which supported American independence, was one of those towns to face this hardship.
On the morning of July 7, 1779, over 2,000 British soldiers arrived here by ship. They landed on Fairfield Beach under the command of General William Tryon. For two days, British soldiers raided and burned many homes, destroying much of the town of Fairfield.
