As tensions between the British Crown and the American colonies escalated, divisions among friends, neighbors, and even family members deepened. Those who still supported the Crown were considered enemies of independence. While many colonists hoped to remain neutral, the Revolutionary War’s arrival in New England forced many to choose sides. Fairfield stood strong as a patriot town throughout the American Revolution, yet it was home to loyalists like Anglican minister John Sayre. Discover how Connecticut residents debated the question of independence or loyalty and uncover the depths of loyalty for to the Crown as tensions between patriots and loyalists boiled over.
