Honoring successful harvests stretches back to the longstanding traditions of Indigenous communities celebrating seasonal foods. In 1621, English colonists in Plymouth, MA celebrated their first harvest alongside the Wampanoag people who had taught them to grow corn and squash. The Thanksgiving we know today took shape when Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday of November as a national holiday starting in 1863. Join the Fairfield Museum’s Curator Chelsea Garth to explore the long history of Thanksgiving’s origins and its evolution, as well as how it is remembered today.
